亲爱的 Dracula: Series 5 Stickers (including Dragon Con exclusive)

Yesterday I received the Baby Nightsoil Series 5 Stickers in the mail. This batch is even bigger than Series 4, making it the biggest batch yet. A complete set would include 8 stickers. You may notice somewhat a return to pandas in the batch after exploring other critters in Series 4 and Series 3. This series contains a panda tribute to the recently deceased Hot Rod Rowdy Roddy Piper, a throwback from the Super Mario calendar, and some lovely panda ladies. This series also includes a sticker that will only be available for the next four days while supplies last during Atlanta’s notorious science fiction/fantasy convention Dragon Con, a send up of Jim Jones of the People’s Temple and J’onn J’onnz the Martian Manhunter, founding member of the Justice League of America. If you’re interested in any of these stickers and you’re attending this year’s convention, there are two easy ways to track me down: 1) Go to the Art Show between 3pm and 8pm and look for the most overwhelmingly handsome volunteer which will be me. 2) Attend the DC Comics an Cultural Studies panel on Monday at 2:30pm in Hanover F (the Comics track room) at the Hyatt. I like to trade stickers for art, comics, and pictures of cosplayers.

亲爱的 Dracula: Rowdy Roddy Panda

Here’s a piece I created in memory of the Hot Rod Rowdy Roddy Piper, one of my favorite wrestlers from childhood who died last week. I’m considering using this image in Baby Nightsoil Sticker Series 5 as the panda portraits of James Brown and Hank Williams, Sr. turned out to be some of the most popular from Series 3. Also I like the idea of a sticker featuring a professional wrestling legend with instructions like Buy, Conform, Stay Asleep, and Consume. I don’t think anybody’s ever done anything like that before….

I’ve been considering doing  an animal legends of wrestling series- King Kong Bundy as a gorilla, Superfly Jimmy Snuka as a fly, British Bulldog as a bulldog, Million Dollar Man as a vicious snake, Big Boss Man as a pig, George the Animal Steele as a blue-tongued dolphin… About a year ago, I did Macho King Randy Savage piece that was also included in Baby Nightsoil Sticker Series 3 but the sticker was a bit too small, didn’t really do the image justice.

I saw the sticker show up on a parking meter in Atlanta.

亲爱的 Dracula: A Sidewalk for Loitering Cats

I’ve been working on a lot of pieces that I’m not sure I want to share online because they’re pretty far out, but also because they’re part of a larger work in progress. In the meantime, here’s a little piece I did that is quite tame in comparison to the weirder stuff I’m currently working on. I’ve been privileged to visit a few natural history museums, aquariums, and the homes of pet owners recently, taking some great reference photos and really playing with this anthropomorphic trip I’ve been working with for the past couple of years. I know I haven’t posted much stuff in a while, but don’t worry- my imagination didn’t dry up.

亲爱的 Dracula: Series 4 Stickers

Series 4 stickers are available now. This series is special for a number of reasons.

1) It’s the biggest batch yet. If you want some, contact me at waynexiaolong-at-gmail.com. They’re not exactly for sale, but I’d love to trade them for help/collaboration on some of my projects (coloring, modeling, writing, etc.)

2) They sparkle in the sunshine, but don’t worry- it’s still 亲爱的 Dracula, not 亲爱的  Twilight.

3) No pandas….what?!? This batch honors some of my other favorite critters in the animal kingdom.

4) Several feature cat erotica. By fateful coincidence, I was visiting one of my favorite friends the same weekend I picked up these stickers. I had totally forgotten my friend was a cat erotica enthusiast! Maybe the next batch will have some sexy gentlemen in them…

5) Some are cut to look like creepy polaroids in a 1970s animal kingdom pornography basement.

Here we have mescaline spinach lizards at the gates of dawn… more lizards, more rainbows… You can pick up a clock with this design that can also serve as a 24-hour shaman.

亲爱的 Dracula: Lizard Sunrise

Here’s another lizard pic for all the lizard lovers out there in TV land. Unlike some of the recent animal pieces I’ve posted recently, this one veers away from the 1960s faded rainbow color harmony in favor of a more disturbing diseased flesh landscape- a blend of well-worn cowboy face with a mutated cowboy environment. I’ve had a fascination with a sort of necrotic Gaia setting, a corrupt global consciousness succumbing the weakness of the life that defines it, spiraling into a mass unified depression, rivers slitting their wrists while violins play the most minor keys that only the most suicidal of composers can conceive while the thumping collective heartbeat sinks to a mere single beat per minute. The chilling sense of infinity that comes from single point of reference, horizon-gazing, mirroring, rule of thirds, Kubrickin’, macro the micro/micro the macro, etc. and the like- I’m a sucker for all those motifs.

Here’s another sampling from the Rainbow Menagerie I’ve been working on. My recent work with rainbows has stemmed largely from my nephew learning his colors. I’m actually working on a color-themed project with him now that aims to teach him the colors in Mandarin as well as English. Once that project is finished, I’ll likely post it here. I expect the project to take at least another four weeks to complete.

The goat in these images is based on one of the goats from the Goat Farm Arts Center in Atlanta.

This is a portrait of my friend Jia Jia. It’s based on a photograph taken about three years ago. If I remember correctly and I can’t sweat to, the photograph I worked from was actually taken by her then-boyfriend/now-husband Chinese rock star Yu Dong of the Bear Minorities and Doc Talk Shock. I did a panda version of Doc Talk Shock a while ago (image below). Yu Dong is the one with birds on his shirt. The drummer you may recognize from the group Horse Horse Tiger Tiger.

Subjects include happy young pandas in rocking chairs, panda academics exploring the substance and consequence of popular culture, the War Corps Starlord, and a fantastic noodle spot in Mableton, Georgia called Scott’s Eats and Sweets that I highly recommend.
